Volleyball Drops a Pair

MADISON, NJ. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team hit the road for a tri-match this afternoon hosted by Drew University. The Phoenix (0-6) fell to the Drew University Rangers (11-2) by a score of 3-0 in the opening match and then were topped by the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (8-3) by a final score of 3-0.

How It Happened Match 1: After falling behind early in the opening set, a kill by junior Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) with an assist from sophomore Myla Owens (Westampton, NJ., Rancocas Valley Regional High School) pulled the Phoenix within 9-5. The Rangers would score 5 of the next 6 points to grow their lead to 14-6. A kill by freshman Sage Lague (Fairplay, MD, Goretti) and an ace by senior Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) was part of a 3-0 run by the Phoenix to make the score 15-10, however the Rangers would score 10 of the next 12 points to take set one 25-12. In the second set, the Rangers jumped out to a 12-4 lead. Later in the set a kill by senior Tia Jones (Springfield, VA., Lake Braddock) made the score 17-10 but the hosts would go on to win the set 25-15. Set 3 saw the Rangers jump out to a 7-1 advantage. Later in the set a kill by Eigen-Zucchi, with an assist from freshman Deah Menedis (Reisterstown, MD, Franklin High), was part of a 3-0 Phoenix run to make the score 12-7. However, the Rangers would string together two more scoring runs to push the score of set to 25-13 and close out the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score Match 1: Jones led the Phoenix with 9 kills and added 6 digs. Owens had a team high 14 assists and 8 digs. 

How It Happened Match 2: The Mariners jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first set, but a 5-0 run highlighted by a service ace from Menedis and a kill by Eigen-Zucchi gave the Phoenix a 7-5 lead. Later in the set, the Mariners rattled off 8 straight points to take a commanding 16-9 lead. Although the team continued to battle, the Mariners closed out the first set 25-15. Set 2 started with a 5-0 run for the Mariners, but the Phoenix used a pair of kills by Posiulai during a 4-0 run to pull within one point at 5-4. The Mariners gradually pulled away from the Phoenix and went on to claim the second set 25-13. During the third set, the Phoenix got a kill by Jones and an ace from Posiulai as part of an early 6-4 lead. Another kill by Posiulai put the Phoenix ahead 10-9. The Mariners scored 5 of the next 6 to take a 14-11 lead. Moving forward in the set, the Phoenix would reclaim the lead 16-15, but a 7-0 run by the Mariners would give them a lead they wouldn't relinquish as they closed out the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score Match 2: Jones and Posiulai led the Phoenix with 6 kills each while super senior Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) had a team high 6 digs. Owens added 9 assists and 3 digs.

Up Next: Wilson returns home to face Lycoming College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
