Falcons Down Phoenix in Double Overtime

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College women's soccer team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play this afternoon at Cedar Crest College. The Falcons (5-0-1, 1-0 CSAC) defeated the Phoenix (2-5, 0-1 CSAC) by a final score of 2-1 in double overtime.

How It Happened: The Falcons offense put pressure on the Phoenix defense during the opening ten minutes as they fired three shots on goal, but freshman Rebecca Marakovitz (New Market, MD, Linganore High School) corralled all 3 attempts to keep the hosts off the board. Junior Bailey Miller (Charles Town, W.Va., Washington) took the first shot on goal for the Phoenix during the thirteenth minute, but couldn't connect. Marakovitz would tally two more saves in the first half as both teams headed into the half tied at 0-0. The two teams traded possessions during the first fifteen minutes of the second half as each goalkeeper kept their opponents off the scoreboard. During the seventy-fifth minute of action, the Falcons got on the board first as Rebecca Verdi scored with an assist from Adrianna Tennis for the 1-0 lead. The Phoenix went thirty-one minutes without attempting a shot in the second half until freshman Chloe Antalek (Wappingers Falls, NY, Beacon) scored off of a corner kick with ninety seconds left in regulation to send the match to overtime. In the first overtime period, the Falcons took two shots but neither was on goal, while the Phoenix didn't take any shots. Less than one minute into the second overtime period, the Falcons got a goal from Tennis to claim the 2-1 double overtime victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Falcons out shot the Phoenix 22-3 overall and 11-3 on goal. Miller led the Phoenix with 2 shot attempts while Marakovitz recorded 9 saves. Antalek's goal ties her for the team lead with two.
