CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College baseball team was in action today, as they played host to the Highlanders of Cairn University this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader. The Phoenix (11-3, 2-2 CSAC) split the series with the Highlanders (5-5, 2-2 CSAC), dropping the first game, 2-1, and winning the second game, 7-0.
Game One: Junior
Cam Nolet (Annapolis, MD., S.C. Aiken) started on the mound for Wilson in game one, striking out two of his first four batters. In the bottom half of the inning, the Phoenix struck first as freshman
Peyton Mason (Knoxville, MD, Boonsboro HS) drove in the first run of the game off a double to right field. Both pitchers were firing on all cylinders in this one as both teams struggled to gain some momentum throughout the game.
Skipping ahead to the top of the seventh, Cairn knotted the game up at one apiece off a homer to deep left field. Later on, in the top on the ninth, the Highlanders took the lead off an error, putting them ahead by a score of 2-1. Wilson tried to get the last inning rally going but came up short, as they dropped the first game by a final score of 2-1.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix scored one run off six hits with three errors while their opponents finished the game with two runs on six hits with zero errors.
Nolet finished the game with five hits and 14 strikeouts on the night while freshman
Shane Bowie (Frederick, MD, Thomas Johnson HS) struck out three.
Mason finished hitting 1-3 with one RBI, a double, and a walk, sophomore
Michael Marrale (Sykesville, MD, Old Dominion Univ.) went 1-4 with a run, and senior
James Husar (Oxford, CT., CCBC Essex (Md.)) went 1-3.
Game Two: Junior
Kevin Ehrman (York, PA., Central York) got the nod in game two, getting out of the top of the first without any runs. In the bottom of the first, just like the last game, Wilson found the scoreboard first. This time it was junior
Brandon Cook (Glen Burnie, MD., Shepherd University) who scored off a wild pitch. Skipping ahead to the bottom of the fourth inning, the Phoenix added one more run off an RBI single to left from senior
Dylan Procopio (Pittsburgh, PA., Westmoreland Community College).
In the bottom of the sixth, the Phoenix added three runs off four hits. The first run of the inning was knocked in off a double down the left-field line from
Procopio. Shortly after, junior
Kevin Finn (Gaithersburg, MD., Watkins Mill) drove in the second run of the inning off a fielder's choice. Finally, the last run of the inning came from another fielder's choice hit by
Cook, bringing the score to 5-0 after the sixth.
Wilson added another run in the bottom of the seventh, as
Husar slapped a single to right-center that drove in one. The last run of the game come off a groundout from freshman
Jacob Pryor (Myersville, MD, Middletown HS), giving the Phoenix a 7-0 victory in game two.
Inside the Box Score: Ehrman threw eight innings, striking out four and only letting up three hits. Junior
Max Little (Crestview, FL., Spangdahlem), who pitched the last inning, struck out two batters.
Procopio finished the game a perfect 3-3 with two runs, two RBIs, two doubles, and one walk. Senior
KJ Curry (Bowie, MD., Coker University) went 3-5 while
Cook hit 2-3 with two runs, two walks, one RBI, and three stolen bases. Altogether, the Phoenix finished with seven runs off 12 hits with one error while their opponents finished with zero runs on three hits with three errors.
Up Next: The Blue and White will take on Penn State Altoona (4-6 2-2 AMCC) in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 8, starting at 1:00 pm.
