Phoenix Bow Out in Semi-Finals

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Wilson College women's volleyball hit the road for a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semi-final match at Notre Dame of Maryland University this evening. The Phoenix (9-13) fell to the Gators (13-11) by a final score of 3-0 with set scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-20. 

How It Happened: The opening points of the first set went back and forth and with the Phoenix trailing 8-5, a pair of kills by senior Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) made the score 8-7. Later in the set, the Gators used a 10-0 run that featured a combination of kills by the Gators and miscues by the Phoenix to make the score 22-10. The Gators would go on to close out the set 25-15. Set #2 saw the Gators creep out to a 13-4 advantage, however the Phoenix would battle back. A kill and a pair of services aces by junior All-CSAC performer Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) was part of a run that pulled the visitors within 15-10. Moving forward in the set, the Phoenix got four consecutive aces by senior Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) as the team chipped away at the Gator lead and pulled within 3 points at 23-20. However, the Gators took advantage of a couple of Phoenix errors to close out the set 25-20. In the third set, the Phoenix got off to a hot start, using a kill by freshman Deah Menedis (Reisterstown, MD, Franklin High) as part of a run out to a 6-2 lead. Later in the set, with the Phoenix leading 9-6, the Gators rattled off 10 straight points to take a commanding 16-9 lead. As the set moved on, the Phoenix gradually battled back and back-to-back kills by Eigen-Zucchi pulled the team within 4 points at 21-17. The Phoenix would get no closer as the Gators closed out the set 25-20 and the match 3-0. 

Inside the Box Score: Eigen-Zucchi led the Phoenix with 7 kills and added a pair of aces and 2 assists. Senior All-Conference honoree Tia Jones added 2 kills and 6 digs. Hill finished with a team high 8 digs and 4 aces.
