Field Hockey Advances to CSAC Championship

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team played host to Sweet Briar College this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) field hockey championships semi-final match. The Phoenix (17-0) defeated the Vixens (13-8) by a final score of 1-0 to advance to the championship game on Saturday.

How It Happened: In a match that the Phoenix seemingly dominated time of possession and definitely dominated shots taken, they were unable to pull away from a determined Vixens team until the final horn sounded. Opportunities to score for the Phoenix came early and often. In the first period, sophomore Hayley Koller (Atglen, PA, Octorara) took the first shot of the match but missed wide. Thirty seconds later, super senior and All-CSAC honoree Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) ripped a shot that just missed the mark. Just before the midway point of the period, freshman Brea Kelso (Shippensburg, PA, Shippensburg) looked to put the Phoenix on the board, but her shot also sailed wide. Singer finally put one on the cage late in the period, but the Vixens keeper recorded the save. The Phoenix took 6 shots in the period but couldn't connect on any of them. In the second period, the Vixens took their first and only shot of the match and it too sailed wide. Just over seven minutes in, the Phoenix broke through as junior All-CSAC performer Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del., Caesar Rodney) rattled the cage with a great shot to give the Phoenix a 1-0 edge that they would carry into halftime. During the third period, the Phoenix out shot the Vixens 4-0, but none of the shots found the back of the cage. With about three minuted to go in the match, the Phoenix had an opportunity to put the match away as Kelso was awarded a penalty stroke attempt, but the Vixens keeper guessed right and tallied the save to keep their hopes alive. The last few minutes was played in the middle of the field as neither team threatened to score again and the Phoenix hung on for the 1-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix out shot the Vixens 16-1 and held an 8-0 edge in penalty corners. Singer led the Phoenix with 6 shot attempts and the goal by Pflumm was her 11th of the season.

Up Next: Wilson will host the #3 seeded Cedar Crest College Falcons in the CSAC championship game this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Phoenix defeated the Falcons 2-1 during the regular season.
