Field Hockey Sets Record with Win Over Falcons

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team faced off against the Falcons of Cedar Crest College (3-7, 1-2 CSAC) earlier this afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. With their 2-1 victory, the Phoenix (11-0, 3-0 CSAC) set a school record for the best start in program history, besting the previous record set by the 1998 team.

How It Happened: Wilson started the match off hot as freshman Brea Kelso (Shippensburg, PA, Shippensburg) fired off a shot that was saved just 21 seconds into the game. A few minutes later, the Phoenix continued to turn up the offensive pressure with a shot from junior Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del., Caesar Rodney). Later in the first quarter, fifth-year senior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) blasted a shot by the keeper that put Wilson up 1-0. A few minutes later, Cedar Crest responded with a goal of their own, knotting the game up at 1-1 with less than a minute in the quarter. The Phoenix managed three shots in the second quarter but could not find a goal as both teams entered halftime tied, 1-1. Opening up the second half, Wilson continued to keep the offensive pressure up but could not find a goal. That was until Singer scored her second goal of the night off an assist from senior Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA., Midd-West). The Phoenix shut down the Falcon attack the rest of the game, as Wilson walked away with a 2-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Singer notched two goals in this one, her 14th, and 15th of the season, while Sheaffer tallies her fifth assist on the year. Fifth-year senior Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) tallied two saves in the game, on her way to improving her goalie record to 9-0 this season. Altogether, the Phoenix fired off 15 shots, including nine on goal, while limiting their opponent to just eight shots.

Up Next: The field hockey team will continue CSAC play as they get set to take on the Gators of Norte Dame of Maryland University (1-5, 0-2 CSAC) on Saturday, October 9, at noon.
