Volleyball Falls to Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball stepped out of conference to take on Penn State Altoona this evening. The Nittany Lions (14-4) defeated the Phoenix (7-12) 3-0 by scores of 25-8, 25-16, and 25-13.

How It Happened:  In the first set, the Phoenix grabbed an early 4-3 lead with the fourth point coming on a kill by freshman Niki Schussler (Chambersburg, PA, Cumberland Valley Christian). The Nittany Lions rattled off ten of the next twelve points to take a 13-6 lead. A kill by freshman Deah Menedis (Reisterstown, MD, Franklin High) would be the last point in the set for the Phoenix as the hosts went on for a 25-8 win. After falling behind in the second set, kills by Schussler and senior Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) kept the Phoenix within striking distance at 8-5. Eight straight points by the hosts extended their lead to 16-5. Later in the set, the Phoenix used a big run of their own, ripping off seven straight points, highlighted by a kill from freshman Sage Lague (Fairplay, MD, Goretti) and an ace by Menedis to make the score 19-16. However, the Nittany Lions would close out the set 25-16. In set #3, the Nittany Lions again grabbed the lead, this time jumping out 8-2. The Phoenix took advantage of a couple of Nittany Lion miscues and used a kill by Posiulai to make the score 12-5. Another eight point run by the hosts pushed the advantage to 20-5. The Phoenix continued to battle throughout the set and an ace by Menedis and three straight kills by junior Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) made the score 23-13, but the Nittany Lions finished off the set and match with a 25-13 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Eigen-Zucchi led the Phoenix with 5 kills and a game high 12 digs. Posiulai added 4 kills and 6 assists. Freshman Shani Rippetoe (York, PA, York County School of Technology) contributed 5 assists and senior Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) added 5 digs.
