Phoenix Rise Past Ravens

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - The Wilson College men's volleyball team played host to the visiting Ravens of Rosemont College in their first home match of the season. The Phoenix (2-5, 0-0 NEAC) defeated the Ravens (0-11, 0-0 CSAC) three sets to none with scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-17. 

How It Happened: Both teams opened the match up by trading points back and forth until the first set up was tied up, at seven apiece. Wilson then started a 5-1 run that put them in front, 12-8. Senior Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) led the attack with a kill. The two opponents continued to duel until Rosemont pulled within striking distance, 16-15. But, the Phoenix managed to finish the set on a 9-2 run, giving them the set, 25-17.

The Ravens opened the second set on a 5-3 run. But, the Phoenix responded by hopping on a 14-3 run that flipped the score and put them out in front, 17-8. Senior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) led the charge with three kills. Moments later, after Rosemont started a 5-0 run, the two teams traded rallies. But, Wilson was able to close out the set on a 3-0 run. Giving the Phoenix a two set to nil advantage heading into the third set. 

With neither team able to establish a solid lead in the third set, Wilson took the slight lead at 9-7. The Ravens responded with a 4-0 run as they took back the lead, 11-9. Wilson continued to battle and started a 7-0 run with Firestone gathering an ace and kill while Oliver Perry added a kill. The Phoenix wrapped up the set on an 8-2 run, giving Wilson the three sets to none victory. 

Inside the Box Score: Firestone had a solid night as he finished leading the team in kills with 11 and assists with 10. Oliver Perry also had a stellar outing as he wracked up 11 kills and nine assists while his brother, senior Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary), tallied six digs, three blocks, two aces, and one assist. Sophomore Andrew Hetzer (Chambersburg, PA., Cumberland Valley Christian) gathered seven digs, three aces, and three kills while senior Joshua Harvey (Perth, Australia, La Salle College) and freshman Samuel Worthen (Guelph, Ontario, Centennial Collegiate Vocational Inst.) finished with a block. Wilson finished the match with 27 kills on 68 attempts against 19 errors for a hitting percentage of .118 while their opponent finished with 17 kills on 68 attempts against 21 errors for a percentage of -.059. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will host the Highlanders of Cairn University (6-8, 3-1 CSAC) on Saturday, March 7, at noon.
