HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hit the road where they took on the Cyclones of Centenary University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup. The Phoenix (7-12, 4-4 CSAC) were defeated by the Cyclones (11-7, 6-1 CSAC) by a final score of 81-74.
How It Happened: Senior
Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) started the scoring for Wilson with a three that was assisted by sophomore
Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, MD, Springbrook HS). Later on, after sophomore
Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD, Northwest HS) knocked down a free throw, Centenary jumped on a 9-0 run that pushed the score in their favor, 16-4. Junior
Christian Evans (Baltimore, MD, Our Lady Of Mount Carmel) ended the run by hitting a jumper but the Cyclones continued to turn up the scoring. Later on in the half, freshman
Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Richmond, VA, Mills E. Godwin) provided a spark for the Phoenix offense. After draining on a foul shot,
Carter-Johnson was able to come up with a steal and connect on the jumper that followed. Shortly after, he hit a three that was assisted by junior
Kyle Hoffman (Waynesboro, PA, Waynesboro). Wilson would enter halftime trailing, 48-29.
In the second half,
Bean opened up the scoring with a layup in the paint, followed by a three from
Thomas. Later on, after Centenary was able to extend their lead to 22 points, the Phoenix spent the next ten minutes chipping away at the deficit by starting a 26-11 run. In this run, Wilson shot lights out;
Hoffman and
Carter-Johnson knocked down back-to-back shots from beyond the arc as the rest of the offense continued to work the ball, draw fouls, and hit their foul shots. When the run was all over, the Phoenix were only down seven points with four and a half minutes remaining. The two opponents continued to battle as Wilson continued to hang on. Soon after,
Bean knocked down a three that cut the lead to five points with 21 seconds left in the game. The Phoenix could not complete the comeback as they would go on to be defeated by a final score of 81-74.
Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix finished the game shooting 35% while their opponent finished shooting 49%.
Bean led Wilson with 19 points and 10 rebounds on his way to a double-double.
Thomas finished one rebound short of a double-double as he finished with 17 points and nine rebounds while
Carter-Johnson finished with, a season-high, 11 points. Second-chance points were crucial for the Phoenix as they out-scored the Cyclones 40-16.
