Phoenix Roll Past Panthers


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix field hockey team opened up play at home against the visiting Panthers of Ferrum College. Wilson (2-3) came away with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Panthers (0-4) in a game where they totaled 12 shots on goal.

How It Happened: After a scoreless first quarter, the Phoenix got the offense going, collecting two shots and two penalty corners within four minutes of the second period.

Wilson capitalized on their offensive momentum as Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, Pa., Midd-West) fired a shot off a rebound that hit the back of the cage to put the Phoenix up 1-0. Wilson finished the period with 5 shots and 4 penalty corners. 

The Phoenix continued to control play at their end of the field as they were awarded three consecutive penalty corners to start the third period. Six minutes into the quarter, Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) took a loose ball in front of the cage and sent it into the back of the net to give Wilson a 2-0 advantage. Singer finished the third quarter with three of the four Phoenix shots.

The fourth quarter saw more of the same from the Phoenix offense, and with three minutes left in the game, Michaela Singer notched her second goal of the contest off of a pass from Breeann Sheaffer. Wilson closed out the final period with five shots on goal. 

 Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished the game with 15 shots and 11 penalty corners. Michaela Singer led the Phoenix with five shots while Breeann Sheaffer and Morgan Burkepile (Millerstown, Pa., Greenwood) finished with three. Singer also finished with two goals with Sheaffer adding the third and the lone assists in the game. 

Up Next: Wilson will travel to McDaniel College on Tuesday for a nonconference game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
