Red Devils Down Phoenix

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The historic season for the Wilson College softball team came to a close in the NCAA Crestview Hills, Kentucky regional. The Phoenix (27-8-2) were defeated by the Dickinson College Red Devils (25-16) by a final score of 8-2. This season marked the first ever appearance in the NCAA championships for the Phoenix.

How It Happened: After a quiet first inning, the Red Devils found some offense in the bottom of the second. A single and a homerun gave the Red Devils a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, a pair of Red Devils runners were aboard when a single down the left field line brought a run across to push the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, a single through the right side brought home two more Red Devils to make the score 5-0. A Phoenix miscue led to another run as the #3 seeded Red Devils held a 6-0 advantage through three innings. The Phoenix responded in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) and junior Jennifer Cail (Lisle, IL, Lisle) each walked. A fly out by sophomore Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) allowed the runners to advance to second and third. Freshman Chloe Perrin (Milton, Pa., Milton) followed with a 2 RBI single to Cail and Durant to make the score 6-2. The Red Devils added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 8-2. The Phoenix continued to battle and put two runners on in the seventh as freshman Claudia Umbrell (Willow Hill, Pa., Fannett Metal ) recorded a pinch hit single and sophomore Katey Roth (Lebanon, PA., Lebanon) reached on an error, but the team couldn't push across another run and fell by a final score of 8-2.

Inside the Box Score: Roth, Perrin, and Umbrell each collected singles for the Phoenix. Junior Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) went 6 innings in the circle allowing 8 runs while striking out 3.
