Men's Volleyball Suffers a Pair of Losses at Wells College

AURORA, NY- The Wilson College men's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses earlier today as they journeyed to the campus of Wells College for a tri-match. The Phoenix (4-10, 1-4 NEAC) lost their first match to, North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe, The Express of Wells College (17-7, 3-2 NEAC) three sets to nil. They would also go on lose their second match to the Nittany Lions of Penn State Behrend (11-6, 5-2 AMCC), three sets to none. 

First Match: Wilson went up against The Express in the first match of the day. Wells jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open up the first set. Wilson gathered themselves and cut the deficit to just two points, taking the score to 11-9. The Express started up another run that furthered their lead to 18-12 and eventually took the first set by a score of 25-19.

After their opponents opened the second set on a 5-1 run, Wilson started to slowly chip away at the Express lead and would eventually cut the lead to three points, bringing the score to 15-12. Wells responded by furthering their lead to 20-14. The Phoenix would bounce back in a big way and start a comeback attempt that included an 8-3 run that took the score to 23-22. Despite a valiant effort, Wells would take the set, 25-22. 

In the final set of the match, The Express started on an 11-1 run. While the Phoenix were able to score points, they struggled to start on a run and Wells would take the set, 25-12.  

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished with 25 kills against 21 errors on 78 attempts while their opponents tallied 39 kills against 11 errors on 73 attempts. Seniors Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) and Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led the Phoenix with 12 kills and 8 kills, respectively. Junior Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) was able to set up 15 assists in the match, Evan Hoke was able to rack up eight digs while junior Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) had four digs.

Second Match: In the second match of the afternoon, Wilson got ready to square off against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Behrend. In the first set, Penn State started on a 5-0 run. The Phoenix, however, responded immediately by scoring three quick points that brought the score to 5-3. The Phoenix struggled to get their offense going, as the Nittany Lions would go on the set, 25-10. 

With the two teams battling early in the second set, Wilson started a 3-0 run that evened the score up at 11 apiece. The two foes continued to trade points back and forth for the majority of the set until Penn State started a 5-0 run that tipped the score in their favor, 21-15. The Phoenix would not give in and continued to fight, but the deficit proved to be too large as they would lose this set by a score of 25-20. 

After the Nittany Lions jumped out to an 8-2 lead early in the third set, Wilson started to creep back into the set as they were able to bring the match to within three points; bringing the score to 9-6. Behrend would start on several runs in the set and eventually go on to take the final set by score of 25-14. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix finished the match with 23 kills against 25 errors on 79 attempts, their opponents finished with 37 kills on 7 errors on 66 attempts. Aaron Hoke and Evan Hoke led Wilson again with seven kills and five kills, respectively. Firestone led the Phoenix with 16 assists and tallied up five digs, while Junior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) finished with four digs, four kills, and one ace.

Up Next: After this weekend's road trip, Wilson will have this week off as they get ready to head into Spring Break. They will return to action next Saturday, March 23, where they will host Keuka College and Penn State Altoona in a tri-match starting at 12:00 p.m.
