CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix men's hoops team finished up nonconference play this evening against the University of Valley Forge Patriots. Wilson (13-11, 8-3 CSAC) stormed their way to a 113-57 victory over the Patriots (1-19) in front of an electric crowd.
How It Happened: The Phoenix started the game out by taking an early 10-5 lead after
Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) connected on a transition three-pointer off a pass from
Daeshaun Johnson (Waldorf, Md., St. Charles HS). After trading buckets for a few possessions, the Phoenix took off on a 9-0 run to take a 12-point lead over the Patriots. The scoring run came off of three consecutive Wilson three-pointers by
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley),
Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Texas, Forest Park) and
Ian Hess.
Valley Forge was able to hang around keeping the deficit within reach for most of the first half, however trailing by just nine with three minutes to play they allowed the Phoenix to go on an 11-0 run to end the half.
Christian White (Woodbridge, Va., Gar-Field SHS) started the run with a three ball that was followed by a
Jake Young (Friendship, MD, Allegany College of MD) three. After two free throws, the Phoenix finished the run with a
Keion Adams layup and foul shot. At the half, Wilson led 49-29.
The second half began with the Phoenix making their first 7 of 8 shots, outscoring the Patriots 18-4 in the first 3 minutes of play, leading 67-33. Wilson continued to dominate the pace of play and by to eight minute mark they held a 40-point advantage and would later extend that to a 50-point lead. The Phoenix offense continued to knock down shots as they rolled to a 56-point win, scoring 64 points in the second half alone.
Inside the Box Score: The team shot 51% for the game including 57% in the second half. The Phoenix shot lights out from three, hitting 18 in the game to shoot 48%. The Wilson defense also forced 24 Valley Forge turnovers and out-rebounded the Patriots 49-27.
Rashaan Bean finished with a team-high 17 points while
Keion Adams added 15.
Daeshaun Johnson and
Jake Young also reached double figures with Johnson scoring 11 points and 6 assists and Young finishing with 12 points. As a team, the Phoenix dished out 28 assists, with Johnson and
Kyle Hoffman (Waynesboro, Pa., Waynesboro) combining for 13 of them.
Up Next: Wilson will have a week off before hosting CSAC leader, Cairn University (16-7, 9-1 CSAC) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
