Women's Hoops Falls in ECAC Tournament

CHESTER, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team saw their best season in 18 years, in which the team won 16 games, reached the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semi-finals and earned  a trip to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament, come to an end in the first round of the  ECAC tournament as the Phoenix (16-12) fell to the host Pride (20-7) of Widener University by a final score of 65-41.

How It Happened: The opening quarter saw the Phoenix get off to a slow start as the Pride jumped out to an 11-0 lead before senior All-CSAC performer Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, MD) got the Phoenix on the board with 2:45 left in the period. Turnovers were the main culprit in the quarter as the Phoenix turned the ball over 11 times while finishing the quarter with 8 points. The Phoenix shot it well in the opening frame, knocking down 40% of their shots and controlling the boards with 10 rebounds. However, the Pride held a 17-8 lead at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, the Phoenix offense heated up even more as the team knocked down 50% of the shots, including a couple of three-pointers, but 7 more turnovers led to 7 points for the Pride. Wyatt and senior All-CSAC performer Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) combined for 20 of the 24 Phoenix points at the break but the Pride had extended their lead to 37-24. During the third quarter, the Phoenix offense went cold as the team made only 3 of 13 shots including just 1 of 6 from three point range as the Pride extended their lead to 55-31 after three quarters. The Phoenix continued to battle but couldn't muster a comeback in the fourth quarter as the shooting stayed cold and the Pride closed out the game with a 65-41 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix shot 17 of 51 from the field for 33% while the Pride shot 23 of 62 for 37%. Wyatt led the Phoenix offense with 19 points while Purvis closed out her career with a 10 point and 12 rebound double-double. Senior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) added 7 points, 5 rebounds and a team high 4 steals. Sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) was the only other Phoenix to get in the scoring column with a 5 point effort.
