Field Hockey Advances to CSAC Championship

ALLENTOWN, Pa.- The third-seeded Wilson College field hockey team took on the second seed Cedar Crest College Falcons this afternoon in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Semifinals. A hat trick from junior Michaela Singer helped push the Phoenix past the Falcons, 4-3.

With the win, Wilson advances to their fifth consecutive conference championship and will be looking for their first NCAA appearance on Saturday.

How It Happened: Midway through the first period, the Falcons were awarded a penalty corner and capitalized on the opportunity as they took an early 1-0 lead, taking momentum early in the game.

Five minutes into the second quarter, the Phoenix got a penalty corner chance of their own with Morgan Burkepile (Millerstown, Pa., Greenwood) scoring to tie the game at one. Moments later Burkepile sent a pass to Michaela Singer (Annville, PA, Annville-Cleona) who found the back of the cage to put the Phoenix ahead 2-1.

Wilson took their momentum and ran with it as just before the half Singer notched her second goal of the game, giving her team a 3-1 lead heading into the break. At the half, the Phoenix led the shots category, 6-2 while Cedar Crest led in penalty corners, 7-4.

Wilson continued their dominant play in the third period with Michaela Singer scoring her third goal of the game to complete her fourth hat trick of the year. Heading into the fourth quarter and the Phoenix leading 4-1, the Falcons were looking to begin a big comeback. With less than six minutes left in the game, Cedar Crest cut their deficit down to two with another penalty corner goal. Two minutes later, the Falcons scored again off a corner to make for an interesting final three minutes. However, the Phoenix staved off any attempts to tie the game and came away with a 4-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Shots were 9-7 in favor of the Phoenix, who also had 8 shots on goal.
