Phoenix Fall in Post Season

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The best season in recent history for the Wilson College women's volleyball team came to a close in the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament this evening. The Phoenix (7-13) fell to the Lions of Bryn Athyn (9-12) by a final score of 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-23).

How It Happened: The Phoenix matched up with the Lions for the second time in four days and both times on the road and with the exception of one point in the second set, the scores of both contests and all six sets were the same. The Lions jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, however the Phoenix would rally to take an 8-7 advantage on the strength of back-to-back kills by freshman All-CSAC performer Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) and a service ace by senior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown). A 7-2 run by the Lions followed as the hosts opened up a 16-11 lead. The Phoenix took advantage of some mistakes by the Lions and rattled off 8 of 10 points to pull within 24-22, but the Lions closed out the set 25-22. The second set saw both teams run out to a 10-10 tie and trade points until the match was 14-14. A 5-1 run by the Lions created some separation to give the hosts a 19-15 edge. Later in the set, the Phoenix got back-to-back kills from freshmen Tia Jones (Springfield, VA., Lake Braddock) and Madison Coy (Indiana, PA., Penns Manor) to pull within 23-21. Again, the Lions recorded the last two points to close out the set 25-21. The third set saw the Phoenix take advantage of some Lion miscues and used a kill by junior Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) to take a 7-5 lead. An 8-2 run by the Lions followed as they took a 13-9 lead. A pair of kills by Posiulai and sophomore Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl., Coral Springs) pulled te Phoenix to within 13-12. Later in the set and trailing by four points, the Phoenix would battle back to tie the match at 18-18 with the final point coming on an ace by Coy. After trading a few points, back-to-back kills by Jones and Coy put the Phoenix up 23-22, however the Lions tallied the final three points to close out the set 25-23 and the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 29 kills against 22 errors on 119 attempts for an attacking percentage of .059 while the Lions had 32 kills against 18 errors on 122 attempts for a .115 attacking percentage.
