Women's Hoops Wins at Hollins

ROANOKE, Va. - The Wilson College women's basketball team hit the road for a non-conference match-up with Hollins University this afternoon. The Phoenix (8-10) now have 8 wins on the season which is the most for the program since the 2002-03 season.

How It Happened: The Phoenix opened the game on an 11-0 run capped off by a layup by junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) with an assist from junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI, Bladensburg (Md.)). Hollins (3-16) didn't score their first points until there was less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter and closed out the opening quarter on a 6-0 run making the score 11-6 Phoenix after one. In the second quarter, the Phoenix pushed the lead to 13 points on a three-pointer by junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) followed by a free throw from freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) to make it a 27-14 game. Hollins hit a late three-pointer to make it 27-17 Phoenix at the half. The second half opened with Hollins going on a 15-3 run to take a 32-30 advantage. Both teams continued to battle and a three-pointer by Singer put the Phoenix ahead 38-36 heading to the fourth quarter. Leading by three points midway through the final frame, the Phoenix got a jumper from Singer and back-to-back buckets by sophomore Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa., Perkiomen School) to extend the lead to nine points with three minutes remaining. Hollins never got closer than five points down the stretch as the Phoenix pulled out the 58-49 road victory.

Inside the Box Score:  The Phoenix converted 23 Hollins turnovers into 18 points. Singer led three Phoenix in double-digit scoring with 14 points followed by 11 points from Burdo and 10 points from Wallace, who narrowly missed a double-double for the second straight game with a team high 9 rebounds.
