Men's Soccer Blanked in Season Opener

Langhorne, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team opened the 2017 season on the road at Cairn University. In wet and rainy conditions, the Phoenix (0-1) were topped by the Highlanders (1-1) by a score of 2-0.

How it Happened: Early in the first half, the Highlanders Brett Kikendall connected on a penalty kick to put the hosts up 1-0 in the fourteenth minute. The Phoenix had an opportunity late in the first half on a shot by junior Kevin Lysaght (Toms River, NJ., Toms River North) that was saved and on the impending corner kick when a shot by junior Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) sailed high. In the second half, the Highlanders got a goal just over a minute in as Kikendall scored for the second time in the match. Later in the half, the Phoenix fired four shots on goal in a three minute span, but were unable to connect as the Highlanders went on for the 2-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 22-15 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. First year goalkeeper Kieren Marshall (Melbourne, Australia, Haileybury) recorded 7 saves in his collegiate debut.

Up Next: Wilson will open the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday, September 5 versus Rosemont College at 5:00 p.m.
