Men's Volleyball Closes Out Season


LANCASTER, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team closed out the 2017 season with a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference road matches against the top two teams in the conference. The Phoenix (8-21, 5-11) were topped 3-0 by Penn State Altoona (21-5, 15-1) and dropped the second match of the day 3-1 to Lancaster Bible College (25-8, 12-4).

In the opener, the Nittany Lions won by scores of 25-16, 29- 27, 25-19. The Phoenix got a strong performance from sophomore
Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) who had a match high 12 kills and led the team with 13 digs. Freshman Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) added 11 kills and a team high 2 blocks and classmate Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) tallied a match high 31 assists. For the match the Phoenix had 35 kills against 20 errors on 117 attempts for a .128 attacking percentage, while the Nittany Lions posted 39 kills against 18 errors on 103 attempts for a .204 attacking percentage. 

During the second match of the afternoon, the Phoenix fell to the Chargers by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, and 25-20. Baxter tallied a match high 19 kills, while Aaron Hoke 12 kills, 2 blocks, and 11 digs. Firestone had  a team high 41 assists and sophomore
Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led the way with a match high 16 digs. For the match the Phoenix had 44 kills against 21 errors on 142 attempts for an attacking percentage of .162, while the Chargers had 53 kills against 21 errors on a 126 attempts for .254 attacking percentage. 

Wilson won a program record 8 games during the season in just the second year of the men's volleyball program.
