Men's Hoops Rally Falls Short Against Bison

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hosted North Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Gallaudet University in the teams final game of the season. The Bison topped the Phoenix by a score of 94-85.

On a day when the Phoenix (7-18, 6-14 NEAC) honored their lone senior,
Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ), the team took on the first place Bison (20-5, 18-2 NEAC) and gave their opponent all they could handle. After falling behind 3-0 the Phoenix went on an 8-0 run highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park). The Bison would rattle off the next 18 points to take a 21-8 lead until a three-pointer by sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) stopped the run. Late in the first half, with the Bison leading by 21 points at 45-24, the five straight points by Adams pulled the Phoenix within 45-29 with 2:30 to go. After a basket by the Bison, the Phoenix ended the half on a 6-0 run with a jumper from Bean and a pair of free throws and a bucket just before time expired by Frazier to get within striking distance at 47-35 going into the half.

A tough runner in the lane by junior
Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md. , Chapelgate Christian ) got the Phoenix offense going early in the second half. A few minutes later Adams knocked down a three-pointer with an assist from Bean to pull the Phoenix within 8 points at 51-43. A 9-2 run by the Phoenix that ended with just over twelve minutes to go cut the Bison lead to 4 points at 60-56. A three-pointer by sophomore Dominique Walker (Smyrna, DE, St. Thomas More Academy)started the run, which included another three-pointer by Adams. After a bucket by the Bison, a three-pointer by Marquise Beckett and a free throw by Walker pulled the Phoenix to within 2 points at 62-60 with 11:32 to go in regulation. But a 12-0 run by the Bison would seemingly put the game out of reach as they took a 14 point lead at 78-64 with under five minutes to play. However, the Phoenix battled to the very end getting buckets from Adams, Frazier and freshman Elijah Lowe (York, Pa., Eastern York) down the stretch and a three-pointer by Bean with 51 seconds left pulled the Phoenix within 3 points at 85-82, but the Bison would sink 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to claim the 94-85 victory.

Although unable to play due to injury, the Phoenix honored senior Marquis Nelson before the game. Nelson will be the first men's basketball player to graduate from Wilson College and during his career averaged 12 points per game.

The Phoenix got a career high 39 points from Adams and 18 points from Frazier to lead the offense.

This concludes the season for the men's basketball team.
