Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Furious Rally Falls Short at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hit the road for a non-conference match-up with Hood College. Despite a furious rally by the Phoenix (3-4) the Blazers (3-5) held on for a 90-83 victory.

How It Happened: "Live by the three, die by the three" is a common expression used to describe a team that relies heavily on the three-point shot to win basketball games. While that expression is probably a little outdated, you certainly wouldn't expect to lose a game when making a season high 18 three-pointers and shooting over 46% from behind the arc but that's exactly what happened in the game tonight. The first 12 points of the game for the Phoenix came from a pair of three-pointers by sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) and one each from juniors Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) as the visitors held a three point lead eight minutes in. As the teams continued to battle over the next several minutes, a layup by senior Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian) gave the Phoenix a 26-23 lead with five minutes to go before the break. A 15-5 run to end the half by the Blazers put them ahead 40-31 at halftime. In the opening minutes of the second half, the Blazers used a 16-3 run to open up a commanding 22 point lead over the Phoenix, a lead which grew as large as 27 points. Although the Phoenix continued to battle, a three-pointer by the Blazers just before the six minute mark kept the hosts lead at 20 points. Over the final six minutes a furious rally by the Phoenix ensued. A layup by Bean followed by a steal by senior Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian) led to another Bean layup. Adams and freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) followed with a pair of three-pointers and just like that the Blazers lead was cut in half at 83-73. The Phoenix weren't done yet as a layup by Frazier, a three-pointer by freshman Ian Hess (Orlando, Fl., Lyman ), and a bucket by Adams pulled the Phoenix within 85-80 with a minute to go. After a Blazers made free throw, Bean knocked down another three-pointer to make it a one possession game with 33 seconds left. However, the Phoenix would get no closer as the Blazers hit their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 90-83 win.

Inside the Box Score: Powell and Bean led the offense with 22 points each while Adams added 17 points and 9 rebounds. The Phoenix took a season high 39 three-point attempts and made a season high 18 of them while hitting 46.2% from behind the arc. The Blazers were hot from the floor as well hitting on 52.5% of their shots from the floor including 50% from behind the arc. The Phoenix were out rebounded by a 12-4 margin on the offensive glass leading to a 14-2 advantage for the Blazers in second chance points.
