Volleyball Earns Split to Close Season


ABINGTON, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team closed out the season with a tri-match hosted by Penn State Abington. The Phoenix (2-17, 2-7 NEAC) opened they day by earning a 3-0 win over the host Nittany Lions (9-17, 3-6 NEAC) by scores of 26-24, 27-25, and 25-23. In the second match of the day, the Phoenix fell to the Rosemont College Ravens (4-15) 3-0 by scores of 26-24, 26-24, and 25-21.

How It Happened: In the opener the Phoenix got a fantastic performance from sophomore Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) as she tallied match highs with 10 kills, 5 service aces, 6 blocks while adding 9 digs. Freshman Leslie Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl., Coral Springs) added a match high 14 assists. Junior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown) tied a team high with 9 digs while adding 3 blocks and freshman Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) also added 9 digs while adding 2 service aces. For the match, the Phoenix had 19 kills against 17 errors on 90 attempts for an attacking percentage of .022 while the Nittany Lions had 28 kills against 29 errors on 104 attempts for a -.010 attacking percentage.

In the second match of the day, the Phoenix had a tight battle with the Ravens but fell just short in all 3 sets. Quarry led the team with 6 kills and 3 service aces. Farnes tallied 10 assists and 3 service aces while freshman Delaney Keown (Margate, Fl., Coconut Creek) had 9 digs and 2 kills. For the match, the Phoenix had 17 kills against 22 errors on 101 attempts, while the Ravens had 27 kills against 16 errors on 81 attempts for a .136 attacking percentage.
