Blue Jays Top Phoenix in Volleyball


ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team stepped out of conference to take on Elizabethtown College this evening. The Blue Jays (17-9) topped the Phoenix (1-15) 3-0 by scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-15.

How It Happened: The Phoenix started off hot in the first set as freshman Leslie Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fl., Coral Springs) opened the match with a service ace. A kill by junior Hanna Quarry (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown) followed by a block by sophomores Laury Jean Baptiste (Fort Lauderdale, Fl., Coconut Creek) and Belen Aldecosea (Miami, Fl., Miami Beach) had the Phoenix up 3-0. A 6-0 run by the Blue Jays gave them a lead that they would not relinquish as they closed out the first set 25-11. During the second set, the Blue Jays climbed out to a 15-4 lead, but the Phoenix continued to battle using a kill by Baptiste to spark a four point run to make it 15-8. Again, the Blue Jays used a big run to pull away for a 25-14 win in the second set. After falling behind early in the third set the Phoenix took advantage of some Blue Jays miscues tu pull within 12-10, the final point being set up by a block by Farnes and freshman Stephanie Pleasant (Philadelphia, Pa., W.B. Saul). However, the rally wasn't enough as the Blue Jays closed out the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 14 kills against 17 errors on 62 attempts for a -.048 attacking percentage while the Blue Jays posted 34 kills against 12 errors on 71 attempts for a .310 attacking percentage. 

Up Next: Wilson plays their final home match of the season Wednesday night against Notre Dame Maryland University.
