Phoenix Denied By Wolfpack

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's basketball team continued North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Sunday at Keuka College. The Wolfpack claimed a 68-50 victory over the Phoenix.

The Phoenix were able to grab the very early lead of the game on a pair of baskets by sophomore Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and a jumper by sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ), however the Wolfpack answered back each time and after the opening five minutes of play the teams were knotted up at 6-6. After trading field goals and free throws for most of the half, the Wolfpack would use a 9-2 run that ended with just over three minutes to go, to take a 12 point lead. Another basket by Adams with five seconds left in the half pulled the Phoenix within 11 points at the half as they trailed 33-22. 

Adams and Wynn led the Phoenix at the break with 8 and 6 points respectively as the two combined for 14 of the teams 22 points. Casey Williams led the Wolfpack with 9 points at the half.

The Phoenix opened the second half of the game with a 9-2 run of their own, capped off by a three-point field goal by junior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute), which pulled them within 4 points. However, the team would get no closer as the Wolfpack slowly increased their advantage over the final ten minutes of the game and went on for the 68-50 win.

For the game the Phoenix shot 16 of 63 from the floor for 25% and were led offensively by Adams who collected his 10th double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. McDowell just missed out on a double-double with 11 points and 9 boards. The Wolfpack got a double-double from Williams with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Phoenix move to 4-5 overall and 3-11 in NEAC play, while the Wolfpack improve to 7-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

Wilson will return to the court on Saturday, February 13 at Gallaudet University with tip off scheduled for noon.
