Phoenix Can't Slow Express

Box Score

AURORA, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's basketball team continued North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Wells College. The Express handed the Phoenix an 81-47 loss. Junior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute) was the leading scorer for the Phoenix with a game high 25 points.

The Express opened the game on an 8-0 run, but the Phoenix responded with an 8-0 run of their own. McDowell scored 7 of the 8 points during the run to tie the game at 8-8. The Phoenix would take their first lead of the game at 19-18 just after the midway point of the half on a three-point basket by freshman
Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra). The host Express would eventually retake the lead and grow it to as many as 10 points, but the Phoenix would battle back and cut it to 5 points on a layup by sophomore Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) with less than a minute remaining on the half. A pair of free throws followed by a MJ Williams three-pointer as time was about to expire, put the Express back up 42-32 at the half.

During the second half the Express maintained a double-digit lead through most of the action, pushing it as high as 16 points with just over five minutes left in the game. However a furious rally by the Phoenix would make things interesting at the end. Down 16 points, the Phoenix rally would begin with a 7-0 run on a three-pointer by Adams, a jumper by
junior Marquis Nelson  (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ), and a pair of free throws by McDowell to cut the deficit to 9 points. A few moments later a pair of free throws put the Express back up by 10 points with 49 seconds to go. Back to back three-pointers by Nelson and McDowell, followed by a jumper by freshman Jemel Kaba (New York, N.Y., New Mexico Military Institute) brought the Phoenix within 2 points with 33 seconds remaining. But the Express would go 6 for 6 from the foul ine down the stretch to hold on for the 81-74 win.

For the game the Phoenix were led by McDowell's 25 points, while Adams added 16 points and 9 rebounds and Nelson tallied 12 points and 5 boards. The Express had three players record double-doubles led by Rich Ross and James Feocco, each of whom totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds.

With the loss the Phoenix fall to 4-14 overall and 3-10 in NEAC play, while the Express improve to 8-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

Wilson will be back on the court tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Keuka College.
