Nittany Lions Top Phoenix

READING, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team returned to action this evening with a North Eastern Athletic Conference game at PSU Berks. The Nittany Lions defeated the Phoenix by a final score of 107-91.

In a high scoring game that featured a lot of back and forth action, it was a 17-1 run midway through the first half by the Nittany Lions that proved to be the difference. After the Nittany Lions opened the game with a 5-0 lead, the Phoenix came back and took their first lead of the game 10-9 on a back to back layups by junior
Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute) just four minutes into the opening half. The hosts would go back up a point a couple of minutes later, but a bucket in the paint by junior Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) put the Phoenix back on top 14-13. After the Nittany Lions pushed their lead back up to 6 points, the Phoenix would chip away at the lead and pull within 2 points at 22-20 on a three-point play by McDowell. The Nittany Lions would go on a 17-1 over the next several minutes to take a commanding 44-23 lead with 4:40 to go in the half. The teams would head into the break with the hosts holding a 59-41 advantage. 

McDowell paced the Phoenix offense in the first half with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Dameon Nixon led the Nittany Lions with 16 points at the break.

During the second half the Phoenix battled and cut the deficit to 11 points on a three-pointer by McDowell with 10:53 to go, but could not get any closer as the Nittany Lions would go on to the 107-91 victory.

For the game the Phoenix shot 42% from the floor, including a solid 52% in the second half. The Nittany Lions knocked down an even 50% of their shots from the field. The Phoenix were led offensively by McDowell, who posted a career high 34 points. Sophomore
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) tallied his 9th double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Nittany Lions had 5 players in double figures led by Christian Burggraf with 23 points.

With the loss the Phoenix fall to 4-13 on the season, including a 3-9 mark in the NEAC. The Nittany Lions improve to 7-11 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

Wilson will be back in action this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Wells College.
