Phoenix Torch Nittany Lions in OT

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hosted Penn State Abington in North Eastern Athletic Conference play this evening. The Phoenix used a big second half and overtime session to defeat the Nittany Lions 100-92.

The action was fast and back in forth in the opening minutes of the first half. The Nittany Lions took a 12-7 lead, but a three-pointer by sophomore
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) pulled the Phoenix within 2 points at 12-10. After a bucket by Devin Jones put the Nittany Lions up 4 points, back to back jumpers by junior Marquis Nelson   (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) tied things up at 14-14. The Nittany Lions would use an 11-1 run, including three straight three-point baskets, to take a 25-15 lead. The lead would grow to as many as 19 points for the visitors, but the Phoenix would finish the half on a 7-2 run highlighted by a pair of baskets by sophomore Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md. , Chapelgate Christian ) to cut the deficit to 50-36 at the half.

The Phoenix would use a 7-0 run early in the second half on a pair of baskets by freshman
Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) and a jumper by sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ) to cut the Nittany Lions lead to single digits at 55-47. The lead would get back up to 11 points with just under 15 minutes to go for the visitors, but the Phoenix would use a 9-2 run finished off with a dunk by junior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute) to get within 4 points at 65-61 with eleven minutes to go. Once again, the Nittany Lions pushed their lead back to 11 points with under eight minutes remaining, but a 9-0 run by the Phoenix that included a three-pointer from Adams and another steal and dunk by McDowell brought the Phoenix within 2 points of the lead. A few minutes later, a three-pointer by Nelson tied the game at 79-79 with 2:29 to go. The Nittany Lions would answer with a 5-0 run of their own to go up 84-79 with just over two minutes left. The Phoenix would end the half with a three-point play by Adams and a jumper by Nelson to tie the game at 84-84 and send it to overtime.

During the extra session the Phoenix seized control with a 9-0 run on 4 free throws by McDowell and a pair of baskets by Adams, which included a three-pointer that would give the Phoenix the lead for good. The Nittany Lions would never threaten again and the Phoenix hit the century mark for the first time this season on a free throw by freshman
Jemel Kaba (New York, N.Y., New Mexico Military Institute) with nine seconds to go giving the Phoenix the 100-92 victory.

The Phoenix offense was paced by all five starters reaching double digit points, led by Adams, who recorded his 12th double-double of the season, with 24 points and 13 rebounds. McDowell just missed a double-double with 20 points and 9 boards. Nelson added 17 points and Wynn put up 12 points, while Frazier totaled 10 points. The Phoenix bench outscored the Nittany Lions 17-10, led by Kaba with 8 points and Beckett with 7 points.

With the win the Phoenix improve to 5-16 on the season, including a 4-12 mark in the NEAC, while PSU Abington falls to 5-19 overall and 5-12 in conference play.

Wilson will be back on the court on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. as Penn State Berks comes to town.
