Bison Over Phoenix In Men's Hoops

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hit the road for the final time this season traveling to Gallaudet University. The Bison defeated the Phoenix 89-80 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

The Phoenix started the game out hot, knocking down their first 4 shot attempts, including a three-pointer by sophomore
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley), to take an early 9-4 lead. After a basket by the Bison, the Phoenix went on an 8-0 run on back to back three-pointers by Adams and junior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute) and a layup by sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ) to take an 11 point lead at 17-6 with just over 4 minutes gone by in the opening half. The Bison continued to chip away at the lead during the next 10 minutes and took their first lead of the game 32-31 with just over 4 minutes left in the half. The Bison continued the 10-0 run to push their advantage to 38-31, but the Phoenix would get back within 2 points on back to back baskets by Wynn, but the Bison would add a basket before the break and take a 44-38 lead into the half.

The hosts opened the second half on a 12-3 run and led 56-41 with 15 minutes to go. Over the next few minutes the Bison would rip off a 15-2 run to increase their lead to 70-45 with under 10 minutes remaining. However, the Phoenix would battle back using an 11-1 run finished off by a tip-in from freshman
Jemel Kaba (New York, N.Y., New Mexico Military Institute) to bring the visitors within 15 points a 71-56. Another big run by the Phoenix, this time a 14-4 run, cut the Bison deficit to single digits at 78-70 with less than 2 minutes to go. A three-point bucket by Adams brought the Phoenix within 5 points with 30 seconds left. After a pair of made free throws by the Bison, Kaba made a basket in the paint to get the Phoenix back within 5 points with 12 seconds to go, but the Bison finished off a streak of 11 consecutive made free throws to put the game away at 89-80.

For the game the Phoenix posted 4 players with double digit points led by Wynn, who had a game high with 24 points. Adams added 14 points and 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double of the season. McDowell and junior
Marquis Nelson  (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) had 13 points each. The Bison were led by Trey Gordon with 24 points.

Wilson will finish up the regular season with 3 home games this week, starting with PSU Abington on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
