Wildcats Escape With Overtime Win

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Wilson College played host to Cazanovia College on Saturday at the Gannett Memorial Field House in North Eastern Athletic Conference action. The visiting Wildcats were able to escape with a 94-91 overtime victory.

The crowd was treated to a back and forth action packed game. The Wildcats opened the game on a 8-0 run before a jumper by junior
Marquis Nelson  (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) put the Phoenix on the board with a jumper. The battle would continue and the Wildcats would lead by as many as 9 points midway through the half, but the Phoenix would answer with a 8-0 run of their own highlighted by back to back three-pointer by sophomores Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) and Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md. , Chapelgate Christian ). The Wildcats would not surrender the lead during the first half as they took a 34-27 advantage into the break.

Junior
Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute) paced the Phoenix offense in the first half with 8 points and 5 rebounds as the team shot 31% from the field. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Gavin with 12 points while the visitors hit 33% of their shots from the field.

The Phoenix wee able to draw within 1 point a few times in the second half but weren't able to break through until a jumper by sophomore
Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ) with just over four minutes remaining in regulation gave the team their first lead at 64-63. A free throw and jump shot put the Wildcats back up 3 points but a three-pointer by McDowell tied things up with just over 3 minutes to go. A little over a minute later a three-pointer by sophomore Adams gave the Phoenix their largest lead at 74-71. A pair of free throws by the Wildcats and a free throw by Nelson set the stage for the end of regulation. The Wildcats Will Thompson went the length of the floor and banked a shot in to tie the game with 1 second remaining. A desperation heave by Wynn would hit the top of the backboard and the teams headed to overtime.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 5 point advantage in overtime. The Phoenix continued to battle back and at one point knocked down 3 straight three-pointers on successive possessions, but the Wildcats answered each time. Ray Garvin went to the free throw line for the Wildcats with 12 seconds remaining and sunk 1 of 2 attempts for a 3 point lead. The Phoenix had an opportunity to tie when Nelson missed a three-point attempt and Adams grabbed the offensive board and kicked it back out to freshman
Dominique Walker (Smyrna, DE, St. Thomas More Academy) who couldn't get the shot to fall as time expired and the Wildcats escaped with a 94-91 overtime win.

For the game the Wildcats held a significant advantage at the free throw line as the were able to get to the charity stripe 50 times and convert 34 of those attempts. The Phoenix shot 13 of 24 from the line. McDowell led the Phoenix offense with a career high 24 points. Wynn tallied 22 points, Adams netted 14 points, and Nelson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

With the loss the Phoenix fall to 4-12 on the season and 3-8 in NEAC play, while the Wildcats improve to 7-9 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
