Phoenix Roar Past Lions 83-80

Box Score CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team won an exciting 83-80 game over the visiting Lions of Bryn Athyn College tonight in North Eastern Athletic Conference action.

The Phoenix used an 8-0 run just before the midway point of the first half to take a 12-5 lead, which would be their largest of the half. The Lions would take a 28-26 lead on a three-point basket by Devante Laws at the 4:37 mark of the first half. Junior
Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute) would answer with a three-pointer of his own, during a stretch where he scored six straight points, to put the Phoenix back up one point at 29-28. The teams would trade baskets for much of the remainder of the half and a jumper by junior Marquis Nelson   (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) just before time expired pushed the Phoenix lead to 41-35 at the break.

Sophomore
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) paced the Phoenix in the first half with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while McDowell had 13 points at the break. Troy Steed led the Lions with 12 points in the first half.

The second half saw both teams go on scoring runs. The Phoenix used a 9-2 run to open up a 10 point lead, capped off by a three-point basket by freshman
Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra). A few minutes later, a run of 11-2 by the Phoenix, highlighted by nine points form sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ), pushed the lead to 17 points at 61-44 with just over fourteen minutes remaining. The Lions answered with a 9-0 run finished off by a Rahim Washington jumper to cut the Phoenix lead to 61-53 with just over ten minutes to go. After a three-pointer by Wynn pushed the lead back to 11 points, the Lions went on another 9-0 run to get back within 2 points at the 7:38 mark. A free throw by junior Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) put the Phoenix back up 3 points, but the Lions Christian Rivera knocked down a three and the game was tied at 65 with just under seven minutes to play. The Lions would push their lead to 3 points at 69-66  and a minute later the Phoenix would grab it back on a three-pointer by Frazier. Washington would put the Lions back up to, but Frazier would answer again for the Phoenix with his second three-pointer in a row, putting the hosts up 73-71 with 3:36 to play. The Lions would again take a 1 point lead with 1:22 left, but again Frazier would hit another clutch three to give the Phoenix a 80-78 lead with just over 1 minute remaining. Troy Steed would tie the game for the Lions with a bucket at the 39 second mark, but that would be the final basket for the Lions. Free throws by Wynn and Adams would put the game away as a desperation three by Nick Cereby was off line and the Phoenix held on for the 83-80 win.

For the game, the Phoenix offense was led by Adams, who finished with a double-double of 19 points and 15 rebounds. Wynn had 20 points, while McDowell added his second highest scoring output of the season with 15 points. Nelson was the fifth player to score in double digits for the Phoenix with 11 points.  Steed led the Lions attack with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

With the win the Phoenix improve to 4-10 overall and 3-6 in the NEAC, while the Lions fall to 1-14 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Wilson will be back in action this Friday at Lancaster Bible College with the tip slated for 6:00 p.m.
