Phoenix Can't Corral Mustangs

Box Score

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - With winter storm Jonas lurking outside, the Wilson College men's basketball team played host to the Morrisville State Mustangs inside. Despsite a great effort from the Phoenix, the Mustangs prevailed with a 97-87 victory in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.

In a game that featured several runs and five lead changes, the action was fast and entertaining. The Mustangs opened the game on a 7-0 run, but the Phoenix would respond with a 7-0 run of their own sparked by a pair of back to back baskets by sophomore
Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ). The action would go back and forth until the Phoenix put together a 10-0 run midway through the half to take a nine point lead at 25-16. Over the next four minutes, the Mustangs would answer with a 10-0 run of their own, and the teams were tied at 28-28 with under six minutes to go in the half. However, the Mustangs would finish the half on a 17-6 run to take a 47-38 lead into the break. Wynn led all scorers at the half with 17 points, while sophomore Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) added 8 points and junior Marquis Nelson  (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) tallied 6 points for the half.

The action continued in the second half with the Mustangs opening up a sixteen point lead and maintain a double digit lead for much of the half. Junior
Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD, August Fells Savage Institute) would start an 8-0 run for the Phoenix with a nice jump shot and the Mustangs lead was down to six points, with just under ten minutes to go. The lead would get back up to as many as eleven points, but the Phoenix wouldn't go away. A three-point play by Wynn at the 3:30 mark cut the Phoenix deficit down to six points again, however they would get no closer. The Mustangs would make 9 of 10 free throws down the stretch to preserve the 97-87 victory.

For the game, the Phoenix were led by Wynn, who tallied a double-double with career highs in points (33), rebounds (11), and steals (6). Adams added a career high 28 points and tallied 7 boards, while Nelson was in double figures with 11 points. The Mustangs got a double-double from Ibrahima Toure with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

The Phoenix fall to 3-10 overall and 2-6 in the NEAC, while the Mustangs improve to 10-6 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Wilson will be back on the home court on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. against Bryn Athyn.
