Phoenix Claw Past Tigers in OT

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's basketball team took on SUNY Cobleskill in North Eastern Athletic Conference action and came away with 74-73 victory in overtime.

The Fighting Tigers opened the game on a 6-0 run, but the Phoenix quickly responded with a jumper by sophomore
Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ) and a three-point basket by sophomore Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) to cut the deficit to 6-5. After a basket by the Fighting Tigers Malik Chambers, the Phoenix went on an 8-0 run highlighted by back to back three-point baskets by Wynn and Adams giving the visitors a 13-8 lead. Both teams would shoot extremely well from the floor for the remainder of the half capped of by a three-point shot from junior Marquis Nelson  (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) that beat the buzzer to end the half with the Phoenix holding a 36-32 advantage. For the half the Phoenix shot 54% from the field including 6 of 12 from behind the arc. 

The Phoenix controlled the opening ten minutes of the second half, increasing their lead to as many as 11 points on a three-point basket by Nelson with just under fifteen minutes to go, but the Fighting Tigers would answer with a 10-0 run minutes later to tie the game at 50-50 with under nine minutes to go in regulation. The two teams would continue to battle with the Phoenix holding a one or two possession lead until the final twenty seconds of regulation. A free throw by the Fighting Tigers Chambers would give the hosts their first lead of the game at 67-66 with fourteen seconds left. A foul with seven seconds left on the clock would send Adams to the free throw line for the Phoenix. After missing the first free throw, the sophomore would calmly knock down the second one to tie the game at 67-67. Derrick Quarles attempt to win the game in regulation for the Fighting Tigers was no good and the teams headed to overtime.

In the extra session the Fighting Tigers grabbed a four point advantage with just over a minute remaining at 73-69, but a three-point basket by Wynn cut the deficit to 73-72. The Phoenix played solid defense on the next possession and forced the Fighting Tigers into a missed shot that was rebounded by freshman
Michael Kelbaugh (Williamsport, Md., Williamsport). With the shot clock off the Phoenix had an opportunity to win the game. Wynn would miss a jumper, but Nelson grabbed the huge offensive rebound and was fouled with twelve seconds remaining. Nelson stepped to the foul line and sunk both clutch free throws and put the Phoenix on top 74-73. A desperation three-pointer by the Fighting Tigers was no good and the Phoenix came away with the overtime victory.

For the game, the Phoenix were paced by double-doubles from Adams and Nelson. Adams tallied a game high 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Nelson added 12 points and 10 boards. Wynn also had a game high 25 points and a game high 5 assists. 

With the win the Phoenix improve to 3-8 overall and 3-4 in the NEAC, while the Fighting Tigers fall to 1-13 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Wilson will be home for the next 4 games starting this Wednesday with a 5:00 p.m. tip versus Gallaudet.
