Phoenix Burn Wildcats

Chambersburg, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team won an exciting and intense game over visiting Penn College by a score of 75-70 in North Eastern Athletic Conference action.

The Phoenix offense got going early in the first half as they stormed out to a 14-3 lead, knocking down their first five shots and pressuring the Wildcats into 4 turnovers. The Wildcats would use a 7-0 run to cut the Phoenix lead to 17-13 with just over thirteen minutes remaining in the half and would take their first lead, 22-20,  five minutes later on a jump shot by Thomas Ross. After a Wildcats free throw pushed their lead to thee points, the Phoenix would go on a 13-0 run, highlighted by 3 three-point baskets by freshman
Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) and claim a 33-23 lead. The Wildcats would cut the lead to five points late in the half, but a three-point shot by freshman Michael Kelbaugh (Williamsport, Md., Williamsport) would give the Phoenix an eight point advantage, 39-31 heading to the break.

The second half saw each team battle and trade baskets. The Wildcats would keep it close in the second half and each time they made a run, the Phoenix would seize back momentum, usually from behind the arc. Sophomore
Marquise Beckett (Randallstown, Md. , Chapelgate Christian ) provided a spark off the bench as he netted 3 of 4 three-point attempts in the half on his way to a game high 19 points. However, the Wildcats would get within two points with just over a minute remaining on a three-point shot by Bryce Lonsway. Sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ) would answer with a jump shot of his own during a stretch where he scored 11 straight points, including 7 free throws, for the Phoenix as the team would go on for the 75-70 victory.

Defensively the Phoenix forced the Wildcats into 15 turnovers, including 10 steals and held a 44-41 edge on the glass.

For the game the Phoenix were led by Marquise Beckett with 19 points, Frazier added 16 points, and Wynn and junior
Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) reached double digit s with 11 and 10 points respectively.

With the win the Phoenix improve to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats fall to 2-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Wilson will be back in action on Thursday, January 14 at 6:00 pm at Bryn Athyn.
