Phoenix Soar Over Nittany Lions for 1st Win

Box Score

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team notched their first win of the season with a dramatic 73-72 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona.

In front of a packed Gannett Memorial Field House crowd, the Phoenix and the Nittany Lions treated the fans to a fantastic game. Both teams came out shooting well and the game was back and forth nearly the entire night. The Phoenix offense was led by sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ), who had a game high 27 points, including the game winner with less than 6 seconds remaining. Junior Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) scored 14 points and tallied 6 rebounds, while sophomore Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) added 14 points and collected 9 rebounds. Junior Marquis Nelson   (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) had a solid night with 8 points and 9 rebounds.

The Phoenix used an 11-0 run midway through the first half, capped off by a jump shot from sophomore
Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian), to take a 10 point advantage at 34-24 with just under 5 minutes remaining in the half. The Nittany Lions would cut the lead to 7 on a Jordan Smith layup, but a 3 point shot by Adams and a layup by Wynn pushed the Phoenix lead up to 12 points with just over 3 minutes to go in the half. However, the Nittany Lions would use an 11-0 run of their own over the next 2 minutes to cut the lead to 1 point with under a minute remaining in the half. The teams would exchange buckets to end the half and the Phoenix would take a 43-42 lead into the break.

After a 7-2 run to open the second half and grab a 6 point lead, the Phoenix would watch the Nittany Lions get hot and go on a 12-0 run to open up a 6 point lead of their own with just over 13 minutes to go in regulation, a lead that would be as many as 8 points with 7 minutes remaining. The Phoenix would chip away at the lead and finally tie the game on an Adams 3 pointer with 1:36 left in the game. A jumper by Wynn would give the Phoenix a 2 point advantage with 50 seconds to go, but the Nittany Lions Brandon Gripp would drill a 3 pointer to give the visitors a 72-71 lead with 13 seconds remaining, setting the stage for the dramatic finish. Wynn would beat his defender and take a drive all the way to the basket and convert the layup with 5.9 seconds to go and give the Phoenix a 73-72 lead. The Nittany Lions called time out to set up the last play. Rogelio Christian-Olan would dribble the length of the floor and put up a shot just inside the arc as time was about to expire, but it was rejected on a great block by Holder to seal the 73-72 victory for the Phoenix.

With the win the Phoenix improve to 1-4 on the season, while the loss drops PSU Altoona to 1-2 on the season.

Wilson will be back on the court this Saturday, December 5, when the travel to take on the Pennsylvania College of Technology at 1:00 p.m.
