Phoenix Battle Spartans on the Road

YORK, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team traveled to York College for the opening game of the Coaches Versus Cancer Classic and lost a tough game to the host Spartans by a final score of 72-61.

Sophomore Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) netted a double-double for the Phoenix with a game high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ) scored 15 points and junior Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) was just short of a double-double with 13 points and 8 boards.

The two teams battled back and forth for much of the game. The Spartans pulled ahead by 9 points midway through the first haf, but a pair of three pointers by Adams and a jumper by Nelson cut the lead down to 1 just over a minute later. A three point shot by the Spartans Matt Scamuffo put the hosts up 4 points in the closing seconds of the half, but sophomore Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md., Chapelgate Christian) would knock down a three as the half expired to pull the Phoenix within 1 point at the break.

The Spartans would open the second half on a 5-0 run, but the Phoenix would battle back and take the lead on a three pointer by Nelson and push the lead to 3 on a layup by Wynn with 15 minutes remaining. Dalton Myers would score a bucket to retake the lead for the Spartans seconds later and they would never trail again. The Phoenix kept it tight the whole game as it was only a 2 possession game with 2 minutes remaining, but the Spartans were able to hit their free throws down the stretch and extend the lead to the final score of 72-61.

With the loss the Phoenix fall to 0-2 on the season while the Spartans improve to 3-0.

Wilson will be back in action tomorrow in the consolation game of the Coaches Versus Cancer Classic at 1:00 p.m. versus Pitt-Greensburg.
