Men's Basketball Falls in Opener

LANGHORNE, Pa - The Wilson College men's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season on the road at Cairn University and were defeated by the Highlanders by a final score of 90-65. Sophomore Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del. , Alexis I. duPont ) led the Phoenix with 25 points and sophomore Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards.

The hot shooting Highlanders opened the game on a 6-0 run and never relinquished the lead. The teams went back and forth for the opening ten minutes and a jumper by freshman Michael Kelbaugh (Williamsport, Md., Williamsport) cut the lead to just 3 with a little over ten minutes to go in the half, but the Highlanders would finish the half by pushing the lead to 17 points and led 48-31 at the break.

The Highlanders would continue their hot shooting in the second half. After knocking down just 1 of 8 three point shots in the opening half, they would hit 7 of 13 in the second half for a solid 54% average. After trailing by as many as 25 points early in the second half, the Phoenix would battle back and cut the lead to 13 points with just under eight minutes remaining when junior Kasdan Holder (Zebulon, N.C., East Wake) knocked down a shot in the paint, but that would be as close as the Phoenix would get en route to defeat by a final score of 90-65.

For the game the Highlanders were led by Julian Collazo with 27 points and Jason Kuntzelman who added 18 points and 7 assists. The Phoenix had three players reach double digits in points with Wynn (25), Adams (17), and junior Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) with 10.

As a team the Highlanders out shot the Phoenix 52% to 33% overall. The Phoenix hit 74% from the charity stripe knocking down 20 of 27 attempts.

With the loss, the Phoenix fall to 0-1 on the season while the Highlanders move to 1-0.

Wilson will be back on the court on Friday, November 20 at the York College Tournament with a 6 p.m. scheduled start.
